Unity? Is it possible?

Depending on the definition you use for Unity, being on the same page and living in harmony with every brother and sister in the Christian circle to me seems impossible on this earth. I am starting to think that unity will happen in Heaven when everything is perfect and the (definition of unity) will ring true. I am starting to think that unity is something that we can’t make happen, whether we would like to see it happen or not! It seems like trying to make it happen is not worth the effort. I don’t mean to sound pessimistic, quite the contrary, I just think that having unity with every Christian is an unrealistic thought. Can unity be seen in a different light though? Okay this is what I mean. Can’t unity mean for us right now to love each other where they are with the Lord and not throw judgments on each other or not be in relationship with each other if our points of views and walks with Father don’t line up perfectly. All Christians have one thing in common they all proclaim to love the Lord. Isn’t that enough to unify the body of Christ? Our love for Father will bring unity to love each other like Father has love for his church, which is all of us.

Just some open-ended thoughts that still have room to grow. Please add on if you have some thoughts!!

Nicole,

When the word unity is told the picture comes to my mind is the body of Christ. It is a beautiful picture Bible portrays to us - Christ living in us and we live in Christ (His body). He places us in to the body of Christ when we put our faith in Him. From that point onwards, whether we feel it or not, we are a member of His body. As you said, though we may disagree with many believers (who truly trusted Christ as their savior) we can still be in unity as the members of the same body operating by the instructions given from the head (Christ). I do not even agree with everyone on this small grace community! Let alone all Christians! But I think it is okay. Each member is unique. All of us has different finger prints. There is not even a single person out of the six billion people in the world who has a matching finger print of mine! God made us unique. It was His creativity. But there is a ultimate unity in this diversity. There is one thing what brings unity among us that the righteousness is found in no one else but in Christ alone!

Hi Nicole
I would say unity would depend on the standard about which we are going to unite. In my opinion, that standard should be God's word. Of course, there are some issues that Christians are going to have differences of opinions on, but the fundementals of scripture are the things that we cannot be "wishy-washy" on. For instance. I have a good Christian friend who believes in infant baptisim. He doesn't believe that the baptisim saves the child but rather identifies the child as part of the community of faith where his parents and those around him will teach him the gospel. I disagree with him, but I'm not too freaked out by that. However, I have another friend who professes to be a Christian but is gay and goes to a church pastored by a woman. Both of those (homosexuality and women pastors) are not in line with biblical teaching. While this gentleman and I are friends as far as that goes, I would not describe him as a close friend or someone whom I spend a lot of time with. That is because I do not condone his lifestyle or agree with his interpretation of a very fundamental truth of scripture.

Just my two cents....

Joe,
I understand where you are coming from. However, I have a hard time seeing God not befriendingsomeone who is gay. I remember in scripture that Father spent time with the adulterous woman and the Pharisees gave him a hard time about that, but he didn't care what they thought all he wanted to portray to this woman was how much he loved her regardless her sin. That is where I am coming from here. Love conquers a multitude of sins and that is what brings humans together in unity.

Thanks for your input!

In Freedom, Nicole!
